Towel Trick: Great Success

As many of you have read, my second Xbox 360 Red Ringed over the weekend, leaving me stranded since this time I had no extended warranty to get my back. Thanks to the wonders of the internet and YouTube, I was able to revive my 360 last night through the use of the legendary towel trick. What exactly is the towel trick, you ask? Well, just watch the video above to see, or read my step-by-step description below.

  1. You start by removing all plugs (except the power) and take off your Hard Drive.
  2. Turn on your Red Ringed-system and carefully wrap 2-3 towels around it, being sure to cover all the vents. Leave it on for about 25-30 minutes.
  3. Remove the towels and turn off the system. Let stand and cool for an additional 25-30 minutes. Turn on the A/C or open a window to facilitate cooling. Standing it vertically helps as well.
  4. Once its cool, reconnect everything and turn it on. If done properly, the system will take a few seconds and then boot up like normal.
  5. Mine is still alive so far, but other people have said that the fix lasts for about 3-5 days before it Red Rings again
I don't know the exact technical reasons why this works, but the point is it does worked and has proven to many times. I still recommend getting it properly repaired, but this is a good temporary solution. Best of all, since you're not opening up the system and toying with any of the hardware, you're not violating any warranty or repair agreement.
