Although this news is about a week old, most of the population outside of the gaming hardcore have probably not yet heard about it: Lego Rock Band is in development for release this year.
The first question that must be asked is: what suit really thought that this was necesarry? The Lego video game franchise has provided some humorous, Lego-fied takes on classics such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Batman (and even Harry Potter rumored for next year). But what really is the point of taking that approach and applying it to a party game? Are downloads still going to be cross-compatible? How does this balance out with The Beatles: Rock Band and a future Rock Band 3? This move simply does not make sense and strikes me as completely dumbfounded.
I rescind my previous admiration of Harmonix after they previously elected to forgoe a Rock Band 3 this year because it would be pretty much useless. I thought originally this would be a smart move to give the numeric franchise a break during this downturn of the music game genre while they develop something more innovative and concentrate on The Beatles: Rock Band for this year. Apparently this is moot because they wanted a kiddy version of an already family-friendly game. Quite simply, its idiotic and makes no logical sense.
